1 million spectators for Tour de Yorkshire

With a record UK crowd of 1 million watching the final stage (and 2.2 million overall) of the Tour from Bradford to Fox Valley, our corner of Yorkshire was the focus of extraordinary interest last Sunday.

The 194.5km stage produced a winner in Belgian cycling ace Serge Pauwels, who picked up individual honours by just 6 seconds from the 100 riders who had streamed over the course. But more than that, the event showcased the regeneration of Stocksbridge and Fox Valley.

We were thrilled to be the smallest of teeth in the chain ring for the race as it finished adjacent to the restaurant. We were decked out in cycling paraphernalia and pleased as punch to host Maserati UK, who had sponsored the sportive event. This had preceded the race along 100km of the actual race route, bringing a real buzz to the amateurs.

With an avalanche of positive post-race reaction, there is already a movement to add an extra day to the 3-day race as well as a 2-day women’s event. We’ll raise a glass of an energy drink, or maybe a Perini & Perini prosecco, to that.
